Convicted armed robber Daniel Munyanyi (50), already serving 185 years for robbery, refused to answer questions in the High Court last Thursday, claiming bees had ordered him to stay silent.

Appearing before Justice Christopher Dube-Banda on new murder charges, Munyanyi said bees were stinging him and had told him to plead guilty to the murders of police officers Bernard Chindeke (38) and McKenzie Chitowe (42), and then say nothing more.

He claimed the bees would not leave him unless he pleaded guilty.

Munyanyi allegedly shot the two detectives dead on 1 March 2026 at Ndume Village, Chief Ndanga, in Zaka.

He told the judge that if he kept talking, the bees would swarm the courtroom and sting everyone.

When Justice Dube-Banda asked for his name, age and marital status, Munyanyi answered correctly. But he said he did not know when he was arrested or why he was in court.

His pro-deo lawyer, Tatenda Nyoka, told the court he had failed to get instructions after Munyanyi remained silent during a visit to Mutimurefu Prison.

The judge then asked Munyanyi directly why he had not given his lawyer instructions.

“Ndikurumwa ne nyuchi nekuti ndakauraya vanhu. Pese pandinovhura muromo kuti nditaure nezve nyaya iyi nyuchi dzinondiruma dzichindiudza kuti ndinyarare uye kuti dzichandisiya ndakabvuma mhosva yekuuraya vanhu (I didn’t give my lawyer instructions because bees are biting me every time I open my mouth to talk about the murder. The bees told me that I would be free only if I confessed to the murder),” said Munyanyi.

Justice Dube-Banda then asked Munyanyi whether the bees were in the courtroom. Munyanyi replied that they would invade the courtroom and sting everyone if he kept answering questions.

His lawyer, Tatenda Nyoka, then applied for Munyanyi to be examined by two doctors to determine whether he is mentally fit to stand trial.

The State, led by Mukai Mutumhe, did not oppose the application. The matter will return to court on 25 June.
