A village head in Igusi, Nyamandlovu, has denied claims that he is selling residential stands meant for local families, after complaints from some villagers.

Villagers in Village 8A and 8B accuse Village Head Zwelani Dumani of allocating land to outsiders without consulting the community.

One villager alleged that prospective homeowners were being charged between R5,000 and R6,000 per stand.

Villagers say the most affected area is locally known as “eMagetsini”. They argue that communal land should be prioritised for people born in the area or those formally introduced to and accepted by the community.

However, Dumani denied selling land. He said stands were allocated to children from the community, and that villagers themselves had brought friends seeking land.

He added that he was aware of the country’s laws on land allocation.

Under Zimbabwe’s Constitution, traditional leaders are recognised as custodians of communal land. Their authority is regulated by Acts of Parliament, including the Traditional Leaders Act, which prohibits the unlawful disposal of communal land.
