Vice Presidents Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi skipped a ZANU-PF politburo meeting in Harare on Wednesday that had been tipped to be explosive.
It was the ruling party’s top decision-making body’s final session before Parliament votes on sweeping constitutional amendments that could also extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s time in office.
Chiwenga is said to oppose the changes. Mohadi has not taken a public position.
During the meeting, Mnangagwa was flanked by ZANU-PF secretary Jacob Mudenda and party chair Oppah Muchinguri — the seats usually taken by his two deputies.
Mnangagwa made no mention of the push to extend his term.
Presidential spokesperson George Charamba told ZimLive the two vice presidents were “on government assignments” but would not give details.
The Politburo, which makes major decisions between party congresses, meets at the start of every month.
Wednesday’s session was the last before the parliamentary vote — a moment critics say will be the biggest test yet of Zimbabwe’s constitutional order since the new constitution was adopted in 2013.
