TelOne have sacked head coach Herbert “Jompano” Maruwa after a poor start to the 2026 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season.
Maruwa is the latest managerial casualty in the PSL, following the dismissals of Thomas Ruzive at Triangle United, Mark Mathe and Paul Chimalizeni at Agama, and Tafadzwa Mashiri at Manica Diamonds.
The former Dynamos and Black Rhinos coach departs with TelOne rooted in the relegation zone, 16th in the 18-team league, having taken just three points from nine matches. The Wi-Fi Boys are yet to record a win this season, drawing three and losing six.
It is understood that a series of meetings held by the club’s executive committee since Monday concluded with the decision to part company with Maruwa.
Club president Nduwure confirmed the dismissal on Wednesday night.
Maruwa’s position had looked increasingly precarious as results failed to improve. TelOne’s tally of three points leaves them five points from safety.
“He still has a running contract with the club, which was due for renewal subject to performance-related appraisals, but we had a meeting with him and agreed not to renew the contract when it expires next month,” said Nduwure.
Nduwure said assistant coach Charles Mutero, a former Masvingo United defender, would take charge of the team on an interim basis while the club began its search for a permanent replacement.
He added that the search for a substantive coach would be guided by “a scientific approach to recruitment”.
“In the meantime, Charles Mutero will be in charge of the team as we look for a replacement.
“We are taking our time because we want a coach who can navigate the terrain we are in, so we will be going scientific, using AI tools to fill in the vacant post,’’ he said.
Luke Masomere, Saul Chaminuka, Rodwell Dhlakama, Wilson Mutekede and Mkhuphali Masuku are among the names being linked to the vacant TelOne head coach position.
