A Shurugwi man has been sentenced to 140 hours of community service by a magistrate after being found guilty of assaulting a teacher stationed at Gato Secondary School.

Reason Magedi (38) appeared before Shurugwi magistrate Sithabile Zungula, who convicted him of assaulting Mapasure Seasar (42) on his own plea.

The court heard that Magedi assaulted Seasar while the teacher was demolishing an old school entrance sign to erect a new one. The incident occurred on 13 February 2026 at around 9.30 am at the school.

Prosecutor Matidaishe Pavazhira told the court that Seasar and a group of pupils were dismantling the old sign with the intention of building a replacement.

When Magedi arrived, he accused Seasar of abusing pupils and, it was alleged, instructed him to stop the demolition on the basis that he had not been the one to construct the original sign.

Seasar advised Magedi to take the matter up with the school head. The exchange, however, escalated: Magedi assaulted Seasar and slammed him against a concrete post. He also chased the pupils away.
