Wicknell Chivayo has hit back at social media personality Ethias, following criticism over how the businessman handled a “chema” donation—a traditional financial contribution made to a grieving family.
Chivayo dismissed the comments, saying he does not care about the opinions of “poor people” on Facebook who fail to see the good in what he did.
On Thursday, Chivayo gifted a Toyota Fortuner GD6 (valued at US$80,000) and US$50,000 in cash to Ronald Mujuru, a Harare man who tragically lost his wife and five children in a road accident last week.
Chivayo advised Mujuru to “go and see Victor at Exquisite Car Dealership and collect a brand spanking new 2026 Toyota Fortuner 2.8 GD6 valued at USD 80 000.”
Ethias acknowledged Chivayo’s generosity but suggested that, out of respect, the donation should have been brought to the bereaved family instead of making Mujuru travel to collect it.
“Thank you very much for comforting Ronald with the gift of this car and the money,” wrote Ethias.
“However, I have a request regarding our African customs: a funeral gift or contribution should not be handled in a way where it is said, ‘So-and-so will give it to you later.’ A funeral gift must be sent directly to where the bereavement has occurred.
“It may be very difficult at this time for Ronald to travel specifically to collect this gift. He is in a period of deep mourning.
“I am not criticising the love you have shown him during this painful time, but I am simply saying it might be a burden.
“I suggest you send Victor to deliver this gift in person.”
In response, Chivayo claimed that Mujuru had phoned him to express his deep gratitude, adding that the grieving father was ready to collect the car from Victor personally.
“The recipient is very happy; he called together with his brother, expressing immense gratitude and saying, ‘Mr Chivayo, may God protect you. Regarding Victor, I will head there right now, this morning,” said Chivayo.
“I told him to send his ID so that he can collect [the car] in a day or two once it is registered in his name, and he replied, ‘I am so grateful, you have comforted me.’
“As for the opinions of those poor people on Facebook who hate to see anything good happening, I honestly don’t care about them.
“Why not just say, ‘Sir, well done, you are a true leader (Chibaba)’? You, Ethias, since the day you were born, you have never even held $50,000 in cash, and your net worth is obviously way below $10,000 USD.
“Yet here is someone else’s child who, out of compassion, has spent $130,000 to help a stranger he has never even met. Learn to give credit where it’s due.”
