Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe is set to face additional charges when he appears at Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Monday, as police continue their search for the firearm allegedly used in the Hyde Park shooting.

Reports suggest prosecutors may add charges such as defeating the ends of justice and pointing a firearm, since the gun involved in the attempted murder has yet to be recovered. Police have not officially confirmed whether these charges will be formally added in court.

The 28-year-old, youngest son of the late former President Robert Mugabe, was arrested at his home on Thursday.

The arrest followed a shooting at his Hyde Park residence that left a 23-year-old employee, reportedly a gardener, critically injured.

South African police said that an altercation occurred at the property before the shooting. Some reports claim that the dispute was over the employee not showing up for work.

Mugabe and another 33-year-old man were taken into custody. Officers said the suspects were initially uncooperative, and Mugabe allegedly locked himself inside the house for two hours before being detained.

While spent cartridges were recovered at the scene, the firearm has not yet been found. A black BMW fitted with unauthorised VIP-style sirens and lights was also seized.

Mugabe is expected to appear in Alexandra Magistrates’ Court to face formal charges.
