A three-year-old boy from Matetsi in Hwange District, Matabeleland North Province, was killed by a crocodile on Tuesday evening while playing near the Matetsi River Bridge in Jambezi, along the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Highway.

The boy was with his five-year-old brother while their mother, Tariro Tsondzowore, fished nearby when the attack happened.

Attempts by some people nearby to scare the crocodile away were unsuccessful.

The child, from Masikili Village under Chief Shana in Hwange District, was taken before help could arrive.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said on Wednesday that police and wildlife officials are still searching for the body. Said Nyathi:

“The ZRP reports a sad incident where a three-year-old boy was attacked and dragged into the Matetsi River by a crocodile at Masikili Village, Jambezi, on 10/02/26.

“The child had accompanied his mother and sibling to the river for fishing when the incident occurred.

“The ZRP and the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority are still searching for the body.”

In a separate but equally tragic incident, a 10-month-old baby allegedly drowned in a 20-litre bucket in Glen Norah A, Harare, on Tuesday.

The child had been left playing with his four-year-old sister while their mother tended to household chores.

Police said he was rushed to Charms Clinic, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
