Ibhetshu LikaZulu, secretary-general, Mbuso Fuzwayo has written to Advocate Thabani Mpofu, demanding a retraction of the remarks Mpofu recently made about Fuzwayo’s financial status.

In a letter written by Fuzwayo’s lawyer, Nqobani Sithole, dated 4 February 2026, Mpofu is accused of portraying Fuzwayo as financially destitute.

The letter alleges that Mpofu claimed Fuzwayo “does not even have $10 in his pocket” and had failed to pay his legal representatives.

Fuzwayo argues that the statements are false and malicious, and that they damage his reputation by suggesting he is a pauper who cannot meet his financial obligations.

According to the letter, Mpofu allegedly made the remarks on 28 January 2026 via his verified X account, @advocate_fulcrum, prompting the demand for a public retraction. Wrote Mpofu:

“The Mbuso Fuzwayo application is set down for 9th February 2026, yet the uncomfortable questions we must ask refuse to go away. The lawyers say they have been paid; Fuzwayo says he has not paid them (because he does not even have $10 in his pocket) and that he has not been paid to prosecute the application. We remain where we were: with many unanswered questions. But perhaps, ahead of the hearing, there is now one question that looms above the rest. Only one.”

Sithole said the remarks were clearly defamatory and malicious, portraying Fuzwayo as a pauper and a vagabond, and suggesting he was unable to pay his bills and was financially destitute.

He said the claims were entirely false and had caused serious harm to Fuzwayo’s reputation. Added Sithole:

“Our client has never communicated about his payment arrangements with his lawyers to you or anyone else, for that matter.

“Our client has not authorised any legal practitioner who represents him to publish details about any payment arrangements, and such matters remain privileged information between our client and his lawyers.

“You are a senior lawyer who is expected to know better about these matters, and our client has a good mind to report your conduct to the Law Society of Zimbabwe.”

Sithole demanded that Mpofu immediately retract the statement in writing and publish the retraction on his X account within two days of receiving the letter, ensuring it has the same prominence and reach as the original post.

He also called on Mpofu to issue a public apology to Fuzwayo and to desist from making any further defamatory statements about him. Said Sithole:

“Failure to comply with these demands within the stipulated period will compel us to initiate legal proceedings against you for defamation, including but not limited to seeking damages for defamation, without further notice.”
