A 45-year-old Harare man, Regai Chipanga, is facing money laundering charges after allegedly living an extravagant lifestyle that he failed to explain.
Chipanga appeared before Harare regional magistrate Jesse Kufa, represented by his lawyer Moffat Makuvatsine. He was granted US$300 bail.
According to the State, Chipanga attracted the attention of investigators after he was seen buying several vehicles, carrying out major developments at his rural home in Village A, Nyahukwe, Rusape, and hosting an extravagant wedding at his residence.
Following the reports, detectives from the CID Asset Forfeiture Unit, represented in court by Detective Sergeant John Dunatuna, raided Chipanga’s home.
During the search, they recovered a Honda Vezel, a Toyota Probox, and US$700 in cash, after which Chipanga was arrested.
When questioned about the source of his wealth, Chipanga claimed that he had acquired the assets through gold prospecting in the Bindura area. However, he allegedly failed to produce permits or supporting documents to back up his claims.
As a result, the vehicles and the cash were seized as suspected proceeds of crime.
