The City of Harare has denied claims that there was severe flooding in Glen View on Sunday, which allegedly caused floodwater to knock down a steel gate and gush into a house.
In a statement issued after the reports circulated on social media, the City said it sent a team of experts and senior officials to assess the situation and propose immediate solutions. Disaster Management Committee chairperson Councillor Jane Bingari was part of the assessment team.
The City said the team established that, contrary to claims on social media, the affected area does not fall under the City of Harare. It said the area is an irregular settlement developed privately and is known as Glen View Extension.
According to the Council, the land belongs to a private developer who, without any involvement from the City, subdivided and sold stands without the required consultations or approvals.
The Council added that the houses were built on wetlands, without approved building plans, proper drainage systems or legal sewer connections. It also said no Environmental Impact Assessment was carried out.
The City said it will urgently summon the developer and contractor to address the drainage problems to prevent loss of life due to flooding.
It also urged members of the public to avoid spreading false and alarming information without first seeking proper clarification.
