South Africa’s Border Management Authority (BMA) says closer cooperation with neighbouring countries is crucial to tackling illegal migration, as thousands of travellers return to the country after the holidays.
South Africa shares borders with Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Eswatini and Lesotho, and hosts millions of foreign nationals, mostly from neighbouring countries.
Ports of entry are expected to face increased pressure this weekend with the holiday return rush, and the BMA has also had to deal with migrants attempting to enter the country illegally.
Last week, more than 1,000 women, men and children were intercepted while trying to cross from Zimbabwe.
Speaking at the Beitbridge Border Post on Friday, 2 January 2025, Commissioner Michael Masiapato said setting up a “one-stop” border post with neighbouring countries would help reduce illegal migration. He said:
“The negotiations are underway as far as partnerships are concerned. On that basis, we can confirm that during the current year, 2026, we are going to see this work gaining traction.
“You will remember that the implementation of the one-stop border post is dependent on infrastructure on the Zimbabwean side.
“They are already ready on their side; it is we they are waiting for. The one-stop border post bill has already passed the National Assembly.”
Some travellers, both Zimbabwean and South African, told local media that immigration procedures were much smoother on the Zimbabwean side, thanks to greater automation compared with South Africa.
