Outspoken preacher Alistar Chibanda has been arrested and is reportedly in police custody over allegations of circulating false and defamatory information linked to the Doek & Slay event.

His arrest is said to stem from a series of social media posts made over the past few days, in which he allegedly criticised and disparaged the event through messages, images and videos.

In one post, Chibanda claimed that no “wife material” goes to Doek and Slay parties. In another, he condemned a group of women pictured touching a male security guard in what he described as inappropriate behaviour. He wrote:

“Pa picture apa madzimai anga akubata a male security guard chibharo pajekerere ku doek & slay party. Kudhakwa zvekusvika pakuda kubata murume.

“Ndihwo hujoki nehunzenza hwakarambwa na Mwari uhu, and yet some are defending such evil. We must condemn this indecency in our societies.”

Doek & Slay organisers have since issued a statement confirming the arrest, while reiterating that the popular all-women event remains committed to excellence, professionalism, and integrity. The statement reads:

“Doek and Slay has noted with concern the circulation of sustained false and defamatory information attributed to Alistar Chibanda, which is intended to damage the reputation and credibility of the Doek and Slay brand.

“We would like to advise our community and the public that the matter has been formally reported to law enforcement authorities and is currently under investigation. The individual concerned is now in police custody and the case is now proceeding through the appropriate legal channels.

“Doek and Slay is a registered and legally protected trademark. We remain firm in our commitment to safeguarding our brand, our patrons, and our stakeholders. Any attempts to misrepresent, defame, or unlawfully exploit our brand will not be taken lightly.

“We appreciate the continued support and trust of our customers, partners, and stakeholders. Doek and Slay remain committed to excellence, professionalism, integrity and creating a safe space for women.”

Doek & Slay is a women-only cultural and entertainment event in Zimbabwe, launched in Harare in 2023, celebrating African identity, fashion, music, and sisterhood.

By 2025, events such as the Glamis Arena show were drawing crowds of over 30,000 women, filling the venue.
