The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has said Paul Tungwarara is not under investigation for any criminal activity, contrary to claims circulating on social media.
Tungwarara, who fronts President Emmerson Mnangagwa in sponsoring ZANU-PF projects across the country, has recently been in the spotlight after Manicaland Province party leaders recommended that he be co-opted into the Central Committee.
Since Friday, a statement allegedly from the ZRP claimed that police were seeking to question Tungwarara over alleged fraudulent activities linked to one of his companies.
However, on Saturday, 13 December, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi dismissed the statement as fake, adding that Tungwarara is not being probed. He said:
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police dismisses a fake and false statement circulating on social media to the effect that Police’s Commercial Crimes Division (CCD) is seeking to question Dr Tempter Paul Tungwarara in connection with purported fraudulent activities linked to his companies, Paulos Construction and Prevail Group International.
“The Police has not issued this statement and dismisses it with the contempt it deserves.
“For the record, the Criminal Investigation Department’s Commercial Crimes Division is not conducting any investigations on Dr. Tempter Paul Tungwarara.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police warns individuals and syndicates against using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to cause confusion, alarm and despondency in the country.
“The law will take its course without fear or favour once the suspects are identified.”
The statement, which police dismissed as false, claimed that they are seeking to question Tungwarara over alleged fraudulent activities linked to his companies, Paulos Construction and Prevail Group International.
The statement suggested that the investigations concerned a series of business transactions that allegedly raised suspicions of criminal conduct.
These dealings, the statement claimed, involved the Harare City Council refuse contract, the Cyber City Project, where it was claimed that a foreign national, Nawab Shaji Ul Mulk, lost US$2 million, and the Presidential Borehole Scheme. It reads:
“Mr. Tungwarara is being urged to present himself to the nearest police station to assist with these inquiries.
Members of the public who may have information regarding his whereabouts are encouraged to contact the Criminal Investigations Department, Commercial Crimes Division, or report to the nearest police station.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police assures the public that all investigations are being conducted in accordance with the law, and transparency will be maintained throughout the process.”
