Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr John Collett Mawire, has been granted US$100 bail by the Chinhoyi Magistrates Court following his arrest by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) over alleged corruption.

Dr Mawire, a well-known gynaecologist, is accused of improperly procuring and inflating the price of a canopy for his hospital vehicle, an Isuzu D-Max (registration AGP9271), to claim reimbursement.

Prosecutor Faith Chikuvadze told the court that Dr Mawire allegedly arranged to pay US$1,800 for the canopy through a private supplier, Tinofara Munashe Jokwi, who runs an unregistered business called Zim Canopies. Dr Mawire reportedly paid a US$500 deposit from his own funds.

It is alleged that he later instructed Jokwi to submit an inflated quotation of US$2,100 to the hospital, allowing him to claim the higher amount.

When Jokwi pointed out that his business had no registration or tax documents, Dr Mawire allegedly advised him to use the paperwork of a company owned by his cousin, Auto Quick Window Screen (Pvt) Ltd.

Although Dr Mawire had already purchased and fitted the canopy himself, he is said to have instructed the hospital’s procurement team to open a retroactive procurement process to legitimise the purchase.

He then approved the request himself in his capacity as the hospital’s accounting officer.

According to the State, between 19 September and 3 December 2024, Dr Mawire allegedly authorised four payments totalling US$2,100 into his own bank account, the same inflated amount he had directed Jokwi to quote, causing financial loss to the hospital.

As part of his bail conditions, Magistrate Nyasha Marufu ordered Dr Mawire not to interfere with any witnesses.
