Former police officer Jason Muvevi, accused of murder and previously committed to Chikurubi Psychiatric Ward after being declared mentally ill in 2023, is expected back in court today (Tuesday).

H-Metro reported sources as saying Muvevi is set to be indicted for trial at the High Court after several tests confirmed he is now fit to stand trial. He faces five murder charges and three attempted murder charges.

Muvevi, who is also a gold dealer, is alleged to have gone on a shooting spree in January 2023, leaving three people dead.

He was initially examined by two psychiatrists at Chikurubi, who confirmed his mental illness, leading Magistrate Dennis Mangosi to order his detention at the psychiatric unit for treatment and case management.

According to prosecutors, on 13 January 2023, Muvevi attended a sermon at Chrispen Kanerusine’s shrine with his mother, Shupikai Muvevi.

He is alleged to have left the gathering, returned with an FN Browning firearm, and shot Kanerusine in the head.

Hwedza Police, led by officer-in-charge Inspector Maxwell Hove, responded quickly and intercepted Muvevi on the Hwedza-Murambinda Highway.

Muvevi allegedly opened fire, killing Inspector Hove on the spot and wounding Constable Tendai Mugova.

Muvevi then reportedly drove to Murambinda Business Centre, where he shot and killed Munashe Munjani after a brief exchange.

On 14 January, he fired three shots at a second complainant at Mutare Boys High School but missed.

After evading capture, Muvevi eventually crossed the border and was arrested in Mozambique on 16 January.
