The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has warned mine owners in Kwekwe not to employ anyone without proper identification and references, amid rising crime in mining areas.

Sergeant Cecilia Nhutu told a Zibagwe Rural District Council (RDC) stakeholders’ meeting on Tuesday that hiring people without clear ID makes it hard for the police to track them down if they commit crimes.

She said murder, rape and assault are common in mining areas, and many cases go unsolved because people don’t have proper identification. Said Nhutu:

“We are grappling with a lot of murder and assault cases in mining areas and farms.

“We encourage mine owners to look at people’s identity credentials before employing them because we are having challenges in locating people if they commit crimes.”

Nhutu also urged women to tread carefully online, warning that rape cases are on the rise in the district, with many victims reportedly lured through a social media group called Kwekwe Hookups. She said:

“We have a worrisome surge in rape cases in Kwekwe. Women are lured by rapists through a social media group called Kwekwe hookups.

“Most women and girls have been raped after linking up with strangers in that group.

“We have yet to establish what is really driving women and girls to engage in that platform because most of the victims are married women, and we do not know whether it’s poverty or what’s driving them to a hook-up group.”
