Wicknell Chivayo has urged Highlanders Football Club to consider appointing former Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari as their new head coach following Pieter De Jongh’s departure.

Benjani enjoyed an illustrious playing career, featuring for clubs across France, England, Switzerland, and South Africa.

His career included spells at Jomo Cosmos (South Africa), Grasshoppers (Switzerland), AJ Auxerre (France), Portsmouth (England), Manchester City (England), Sunderland (England), Blackburn Rovers (England), Chippa United (South Africa), and Bidvest Wits (South Africa).

Chivayo revealed that he had informal, wide-ranging discussions with Benjani, asking why he should not consider taking on the role of Highlanders head coach.

According to Chivayo, Benjani expressed interest, but only on the condition that all his contractual requirements would be fully guaranteed should the club pursue him for the position. Wrote Chivayo on X:

“I was DEEPLY humbled by such a condition, which I also considered FAIR AND REASONABLE for a football icon of his stature.

“Following this quick development, through my Curator, I proposed that SUBJECT to the Highlanders FC GOVERNANCE STRUCTURES to consider appointing him through their FORMAL internal processes.”

Chivayo said that, in addition to the US$1 million he has already donated to Highlanders, he would personally guarantee and secure Benjani’s contractual benefits, over and above the existing sponsorship package, which remains available to help Bosso sign quality players for the 2026 Premier League season.

He also pledged to provide Benjani with a brand-new car of his choice as part of his terms of service.

Furthermore, Chivayo promised to take full responsibility for Benjani’s monthly salary and benefits for the entire duration of his contract, should he be appointed.

However, he stressed that if Highlanders decide to appoint a different coach, the US$1 million sponsorship package will remain available for the team’s use, but he will not cover the head coach’s salary or provide a vehicle.

Chivayo added that his proposal has been formally submitted to the Highlanders’ leadership and governance authorities and is now awaiting their consideration.
