Government spokesperson Ndavaningi “Nick” Mangwana has warned motorists, particularly those travelling along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road and other unpaved routes, to brace for difficult driving conditions and possible delays as the rainy season sets in.
Much of Zimbabwe’s road network has gone for years without proper maintenance, leaving many routes dangerously degraded.
During heavy rains, some bridges have collapsed under the weight of vehicles, while others have become impassable due to deep mud, leaving certain areas virtually impassable.
In a post on X on Tuesday, 18 November, Mangwana, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, said several roads currently undergoing rehabilitation may pose additional challenges.
He urged motorists to remain patient and exercise extreme caution when driving on the roads. Wrote Mangwana:
“Please be advised that the current rainy season may impact travel, particularly on unpaved roads and sections under construction.
“Motorists using routes like the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road should expect challenging conditions and potential delays around active work zones and detours.
“Your patience is appreciated as these essential rehabilitation works progress.
“We strongly encourage all travellers to plan their journeys with extra time and caution during this period.”
