South African vigilante group Operation Dudula has threatened to visit schools next week to prevent children they believe to be undocumented foreign nationals from accessing the public education system.
The announcement comes despite a recent court ruling that declared the group’s practice of demanding identity documents from patients at public healthcare facilities illegal.
Operation Dudula maintains that the judgment only restricts their actions in hospitals and clinics, not in public schools.
The movement, which has since become a political party, argues that South Africans should be prioritised and that undocumented foreign nationals should not benefit from government services.
Operation Dudula believes the court ruling could allow undocumented migrants to exploit public resources without accountability.
Leader Zandile Dabula said public schools should give priority to South African citizens. Said Dabula:
“The court does not stop our intended operations at schools. Now this means on Monday, the 11th of November, we will be at the schools.”
Operation Dudula is now appealing the Gauteng High Court ruling that prohibits it from preventing foreign nationals from accessing public healthcare facilities.
