Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Torerayi Moyo, says the Heritage-Based Curriculum is a bold and needed break from the colonial-era focus on education solely for employment.

He described the new model as a decisive shift toward education that emphasises production, innovation, and industrialisation. Said Moyo:

“Our Heritage-based curriculum is rooted in five pillars: Teaching, Research, Community Service, Innovation, and Industrialisation.

“This model is not borrowed; it is born of our own national aspirations. It recognises that for Zimbabwe to thrive in the 21st century, our learners must be equipped not just with knowledge, but with the skills to Create, Build, and Lead.”

Speaking recently at Champion International College in Harare, Minister Torerayi Moyo stressed that education should go beyond academic results.

He said it must also shape character, develop critical thinking, and prepare students to become responsible global citizens.

For this reason, the Ministry is encouraging all schools, both public and private, to adopt a broad-based curriculum covering Science, Arts, Commerce, and Technology. Said Moyo:

“We are witnessing a new generation of learners who are not waiting for jobs [but] are creating them. Across the country, students are engaging in entrepreneurial projects, from agriculture to digital innovation.

“At Eagles Christian Group of Schools, I commended their alignment with Heritage-Based Curriculum, where learners are being taught to Think, Design, and Produce.

“If our young learners can be this productive, what excuse do we, as adults, have not to produce at scale? Heritage-based curriculum is not just for the classroom; it is a national mindset shift.”

Moyo acknowledged that the Heritage-Based Curriculum has faced its share of criticism, but he said it will help the country build factories, grow industries, and export innovative ideas.
