Authorities at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo have announced that the public health institution is set to receive new radiotherapy machines by early 2026, marking the revival of its long-dormant cancer treatment unit, which has been inactive since the machines broke down in 2017.

Speaking during the hospital’s Nurses and Midwives Graduation Ceremony at the Large City Hall in Bulawayo last Friday, Chief Medical Officer Dr Narcisius Dzvanga described the radiotherapy unit as one of Mpilo’s biggest ongoing challenges. He said:

“The radiotherapy centre remains our sore thumb. Since 2017, it has been down. Numerous efforts have been made to repair the machines.

“I am pleased to announce to you all today that, as recently as two days ago, I hosted representatives from Siemens, the manufacturers of the radiotherapy machine, and they have assured me that we are getting brand new machines come March and April 2026.”

Dr Dzvanga said he had been informed by the Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care, Sleiman Timios Kwidini, who was the guest of honour at the event, that Gweru and Mutare hospitals would also receive radiotherapy machines to ensure cancer treatment becomes accessible across the country.
