Vice President Constantino Chiwenga attended the inauguration of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Monday, following her win in last week’s disputed election. Chiwenga represented President Emmerson Mnangagwa at the ceremony.

According to Tanzanian electoral authorities, Hassan secured nearly 98 per cent of the vote. However, the elections were marred by violence.

At least 10 people were confirmed killed, though opposition sources claim the death toll could be as high as 700. The true figure remains unclear due to a nationwide internet blackout and limited media access.

In his remarks, Chiwenga strongly criticised the post-election violence, calling it outdated and unacceptable in today’s world. He said:

“We see the situation that has happened in Tanzania and it is quite disturbing. It is something which has to be avoided at all costs. Fighting is not something we should talk about in the 21st century.

“However, I believe Tanzania has come of age. We want to see them coming together as what was said by all the speakers at the inauguration. Life cannot be restored once it is taken.

“Our relationship with Tanzania is deeply rooted, tracing back many years. As Bantu people, we share a historical connection.

“During our liberation struggle, Tanzania stood as a steadfast ally serving as one of our Frontline States. That is why President Mnangagwa sent me to represent him in Tanzania today.”

Only two SADC leaders attended the ceremony: Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema and Mozambican President Daniel Chapo.

Instead of a stadium packed with people, the inauguration took place at a military parade ground in Dodoma and was closed to the public.
