One of Harare’s prominent socialites was allegedly drugged at a leading nightclub before being raped and left at Chisipite Shopping Centre naked. She reportedly lost over US$1,000 in cash and her phone during the incident.
Campbell Nyakudya has been accused of these crimes and appeared in Harare Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, facing charges of rape and theft.
He was not required to enter a plea during his appearance before Magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa, who granted him bail set at US$200.
The court heard that on Saturday, the complainant was at La Parada, a popular restaurant and nightclub in Harare, enjoying drinks with friends. Afterwards, they decided to move to Karma Night Club.
According to prosecutors, after the complainant visited the restroom, she returned to find her friends had left.
Nyakudya was seen standing with an unknown woman near her table. She then picked up her drink and continued searching for her friends, but had no recollection of what happened next.
When she regained consciousness at Chisipite Shopping Centre, she discovered she was naked, with only a cloth covering her body.
Bystanders informed her that she had been pushed out of a moving vehicle, but they could not provide the registration number of the car as it fled the scene.
Upon realising that her handbag, containing her iPhone 14 Pro Max, US$1,200 in cash, and a wig, was missing, she filed a police report.
She later returned to one of the nightclubs to review CCTV footage from the night of the incident.
The footage allegedly shows a man spiking her drink with an unknown substance before taking her to his car. Nyakudya was arrested on Tuesday.
