A former Premier Soccer League (PSL) footballer, Tumirai Matsika, also known as Brian Abbas Amidu, has appeared in court facing charges of drug trafficking after being caught with 780 kilogrammes of dagga worth about US$78,000.
Matsika (29) was arrested together with his alleged accomplice, Kudzai Mhlanga (41), who is also known as Reuben Mhlanga.
The pair appeared before the Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 06 October, following their arrest along the Kwekwe–Kadoma Highway on 4 October 2025.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), detectives received a tip-off that the two men were transporting dagga from Kwekwe to Harare.
Acting on the information, police set up a surveillance operation near the Gokwe turn-off, where they intercepted the suspects loading shrink-wrapped packets of dagga into a silver Honda Fit Shuttle.
Upon searching the vehicle, detectives reportedly discovered 75 packets of dagga concealed in black plastic wrapping. Both men were immediately arrested.
Investigations suggest that Matsika, a former top-flight footballer, and Mhlanga frequently use different aliases when dealing with law enforcement, allegedly to avoid detection.
The two, who are unemployed, are suspected of being part of a wider drug trafficking network.
The NPA confirmed that Matsika is already facing similar charges at the Epworth Magistrates’ Court and Harare Central Police Station.
Both accused have been remanded in custody until 7 October for a bail hearing.
