NPA Will Not Appeal Sentences For Cocaine-Using Chinese Nationals

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has said the nine Chinese nationals who pleaded guilty to using dangerous drugs, specifically cocaine, are currently awaiting deportation.

The Chinese nationals were each fined US$150 by the Harare Magistrates’ Court, with the alternative of a six-month prison sentence, following their arrest in a drug bust in Newlands, Harare.

The light penalties drew criticism from some prominent Zimbabweans who argued the sentences failed to send a strong message against drug abuse.

Police found the Chinese nationals taking turns to sniff cocaine off a wooden tray, using a golden playing card to cut the white powder on 02 September 2025 during a raid at 60 Knightsbridge Road, Newlands.

Additional drugs, including benzodiazepam and methamphetamine, were also recovered, with the total value estimated at over US$1,060.

In a statement released last week, the NPA acknowledged public concern over the sentencing and reaffirmed its commitment to fair and diligent prosecution of all criminal cases, regardless of nationality or status. It said:

“The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPA) is aware of the public’s concern regarding the sentence handed down in the case involving nine Chinese nationals who pleaded guilty to using dangerous drugs (cocaine).

“We are taking this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to the diligent and fair prosecution of all criminal cases.

“The NPAZ is committed to ensuring that all individuals are held accountable for their actions in accordance with the laws of Zimbabwe, regardless of their nationality or status.

“Furthermore, the NPAZ can confirm that the nine individuals are currently awaiting deportation.

“We will continue to work tirelessly to combat the scourge of dangerous drugs, as it poses a significant threat to the well-being of our nation.”

The NPA said it has directed all public prosecutors to ensure that the correct charges are preferred in drug-related cases and to aggressively pursue stiffer sentences that reflect the severity of these offences.

The authority said this approach underscores Zimbabwe’s determination to tackle drug abuse decisively.
