A 44-year-old grandmother from Guruve in Mashonaland Central Province has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of sexually abusing her teenage grandson.
The Guruve Magistrates’ Court heard that the woman abused the 14-year-old boy on two separate occasions between January and February this year.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the accused person lured the minor into her bedroom under the guise of normal household activities before overpowering him and committing the offences.
The abuse came to light when the victim’s younger sibling told their mother what she had witnessed.
The boy later revealed the full extent of the abuse, leading to a police report and the grandmother’s arrest.
Although she pleaded not guilty, the court ruled that there was overwhelming evidence against her.
She was sentenced to 20 years for each count of abuse, with the sentences to run concurrently.
The NPA welcomed the ruling, saying the justice system will continue to protect minors from exploitation and that courts will not hesitate to hand down lengthy jail terms to offenders who violate children’s rights.
