The United States government may impose new visa and travel restrictions on delegations from Iran, Sudan, Zimbabwe and Brazil during the upcoming UN General Assembly, broadening its clampdown on foreign officials visiting the country.
The Trump administration has already denied a visa to Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and is reportedly considering further measures against other delegations expected in New York this month.
According to an internal State Department memo reviewed by the Associated Press, the potential restrictions could involve tighter visa approvals and limits on movement outside New York City.
Iranian diplomats already face strict travel boundaries. One proposal under consideration would prevent them from shopping at bulk retailers such as Costco and Sam’s Club without State Department authorisation.
These outlets have traditionally been used by Iranian envoys to purchase goods unavailable in their home country.
Brazil’s delegation may also face restrictions, although it is unclear whether President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is scheduled to open the session on 22 September, would be directly affected.
President Trump has previously criticised Lula over the prosecution of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro.
Sudan and Zimbabwe were also listed in the memo as possible targets, though no details were provided. The State Department declined to comment.
