Hillside Teachers’ College principal, Sifelani Jabangwe, has said the college is continuing its work-for-fees programme, introduced in 2022 to provide an alternative pathway for financially needy students.
Jabangwe made the remarks during the college’s 67th graduation ceremony last Friday, where the guest of honour, Deputy Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation and Technology Development, Simelisizwe Sibanda, presided over the capping of 325 graduands, of whom 227 were women and 98 were men. He said:
“The college, in line with the President’s philosophy of leaving no one behind and addressing Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4), introduced the work-for-fees programme, which offers an alternative to financially needy students.”
In a later interview, Jabangwe said the programme, launched in 2022, currently has 30 students participating, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 60 since its inception.
In his keynote address, Deputy Minister Sibanda said the Ministry remains committed to ensuring that every learner, regardless of background or ability, has access to quality education. Said Sibanda:
“We are also expanding the Work-for-Fees Programme to ensure no student drops out of tertiary education due to financial constraints.
“Education must be a ladder, not a barrier. It must be accessible, equitable, and empowering.”
