First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa’s drug and substance abuse rehabilitation centre in Mbare, Harare, has been inundated, with hundreds of people on the waiting list seeking admission.
The facility, run by the Angel of Hope Foundation, officially opened on 12 July.
Less than a month later, it is already accommodating 90 inmates, while over 600 applicants remain on the waiting list.
With a maximum capacity of 200, the centre provides free support services to people battling addiction.
The month-long programme includes group therapy, counselling, and assessments to support reintegration into society.
Speaking to journalists during a tour of the facility on Wednesday, Health and Child Care Minister Douglas Mombeshora said:
Having been opened only three weeks ago, it’s already housing more than 90 clients and its capacity when fully operational is 200 clients. This is very, very commendable.
The centre has partnered with the Ministry of Youth Empowerment and Development to offer vocational training and youth service opportunities to participants upon completing the programme.
Angel of Hope Foundation administrator Charles Nyamukubva said there was a pressing need for more rehabilitation centres, given the widespread substance abuse problem across the country.
He added that the centre’s programme is structured to keep participants engaged, particularly as many have not completed their O’ Level examinations.
