An 18-year-old South African woman, identified as a lesbian, has been remanded in custody by the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court after being accused of murdering a 19-year-old man who allegedly raped her.

The deceased, Shonisani Mahwasane, is reported to have forced himself on the accused, Dakalo Avheani Mulaudzi, claiming he wanted her to “experience how it feels to have sex with a man.”

The incident is said to have occurred in the early hours of Sunday at Lwamondo’s Khumbe Village in Limpopo. Vhembe police spokesperson Vuledzani Dathi said:

It is alleged [Mahwasane] was with [Mulaudzi] drinking alcohol at [his] home.

Mahwasane [allegedly] demanded to have sex with [Mulaudzi] though she is lesbian and said he wanted [her] to experience how it feels to have sex with a man.

‎[Mahwasane] then [allegedly] forced himself on [her], threatening her with a knife and raped her. [She allegedly] took the knife from [him] and stabbed him multiple times.

While Mulaudzi remains in custody awaiting her bail hearing, the community is split.

Some residents are calling for justice for Mahwasane, maintaining that he was not capable of such violence.

Others are urging a comprehensive investigation, voicing concerns over the safety of young women and the growing issue of so-called “corrective rape.”
