Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s office has distanced itself from a so-called “Matabeleland Business Dinner” being advertised on social media, warning that the event is a scam using his name without permission.
In a statement released on July 21, Chiwenga’s office said it had noted adverts circulating online claiming he would attend the event as Guest of Honour. The statement dismissed the dinner as a “fraudulent pseudo-event” and made it clear the Vice President had no association with it. The statement said:
The office of the Vice President categorically disassociates itself from the ‘event’ which has nothing to do with Government, blatantly violates Government protocol; and goes against our organisational norms.
The organisers, who remain unnamed, are accused of using Chiwenga’s name, and that of other government officials, in a bid to mislead the public and extort money from would-be attendees.
Chiwenga’s office said the Vice President takes “great exception” to being linked with such schemes and advised the public to be vigilant against such scams.
