Two former Magwegwe Secondary School students, Dumisani Gumpo and Mthobie Ndlovu, have donated a Starlink internet kit to the school to help learners keep up with modern technology.
Gumpo and Ndlovu, who attended the school from 1982 to 1985, said they wanted to give back and support current pupils.
Speaking during the handover ceremony on Monday, 23 June, which was attended by teachers and students, Ndlovu said it’s important for former students to help develop skills in their old schools. He said:
We felt inspired to do something for this school whose opening we pioneered. We believe this will put the school on the world stage and ensure that they become part of today’s technologically empowered youth.
This is our first donation of a Starlink kit to the school. We have previously contributed funds and bought prizes presented on the school’s prize-giving days.
Funds permitting, and with more of the pioneering students coming on board, we wish to introduce AI tools and robotics to the school, as that’s the level developed countries are at.
Ndlovu said they also plan to explore other ways to continue working with the school to support the learners. He said:
For starters, we believe the children will benefit immensely as a result of this Starlink donation.
Important learning portals will be easily accessed, which is a benefit for both learners and teachers. Technology, as we know, is the way to go.
We believe in this small way we will assist efforts by Government to usher in modern classroom environments and enable learners to compete in the global world with their peers.
To the community, our humble beginnings started at Magwegwe Secondary, and this school inspired quite a number of us.
We believe working together we may uplift each other and shape the future of generations to come.
