The Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) on Monday, 5 May 2025, announced that repair works on the Hwange Stage 1 and 2 units are currently in progress.
In a statement, ZPC said the first unit is expected to return to service by the end of Tuesday, 6 May 2025, and added that it is working diligently to restore full generation and ensure supply stability by the end of this week.
This follows an announcement by ZESA Holdings on Sunday that a technical fault at Hwange Power Station had led to a significant reduction in Zimbabwe’s electricity generation, resulting in nationwide load shedding.
In a statement released on Sunday, the power utility said the unexpected fault at the country’s largest thermal power station had disrupted supply and forced the company to intensify load-shedding measures across all customer groups.
As of Tuesday, 6 May, Hwange Power Station was generating 670 MW, down from the 979 MW it was generating on 3 May before the technical fault.
Hwange Power Station, located in Matabeleland North Province, is a critical component of the national grid and has faced periodic challenges due to ageing infrastructure and maintenance backlogs.
