A police officer, Weston Muzoriwa of Besa Village in Seke appeared before Harare magistrate Barbra Chimboza facing allegations of criminal abuse of duty after he received $15 bribe to release an impounded commuter omnibus. His accomplices are on the run.
He was released on $50 bail and ordered to stay on his given address and not to interfere with witnesses. Muzoriwa will appear in court on June 2. The court heard that Muzoriwa and three other police officers stationed at Police General Headquarters Construction Unit approached Raphael Kavande (36) and arrested him for dropping off passengers at an undesignated point. Muzoriwa allegedly ordered Kavande to drive to Harare Central Police Station before he ordered him to park along Innez Terrace while on the way.
Muzoriwa demanded $20 to facilitate the release of Kavande’s kombi which he said was going to the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID). Kavande pleaded with Muzoriwa so that he could look for the money. He however proceeded to PGHQ where he reported Muzoriwa who was arrested after a trap was set.
