Chitungwiza Municipality has begun clearing broken-down and abandoned vehicles from shopping centres, road verges and overnight guarded car parks in Zengeza, in a joint operation with the Central Mechanical Equipment Department (CMED).

In a statement issued on Monday, 19 October, the council said vehicles had so far been impounded at Zengeza 4 Terminus (Bhotoro-zai Shops) and along both sides of Tilcor Road in Zengeza 3 and 4.

The operation follows a public notice issued on 12 October, which gave residents, vehicle owners and operators of overnight car parks time to remove abandoned and broken-down vehicles, as well as scrap vehicle shells, from car parks, shopping centres, bus termini and open spaces.

Owners can recover impounded vehicles after paying the required fines. Vehicles that are not claimed will be sold at a public auction or otherwise disposed of.

According to the council, some residents have welcomed the clean-up. They say abandoned vehicles were being used as hiding places by criminals and were making the area dirty.
