Deputy Chiefs’ Council President Chief Fortune Charumbira, together with Chief Nhema and Chief Chitanga, have been notified of their recall from the Senate.

Local Government and Public Works Permanent Secretary Tafadzwa Muguti confirmed the decision during a recent meeting with Provincial Assemblies of Chiefs, Directors of Local Government Services and District Development Coordinators.

Muguti said the Masvingo Provincial Assembly of Chiefs met on 14 September and resolved to recall the trio.

He said papers have been served by the Minister on the President of the Senate and on the President of the National Chiefs Council, Chief Mtshane Khumalo, and that the chiefs themselves have also been notified.

Muguti said it was with regret that the recalls were made. He said legal processes for their official removal from the Senate will now follow, with elections to be held to replace them.

“So it is with regret that Mambo Charumbira, Mambo Nhema and Mambo Chitanga have been recalled from the Senate, so the process will now undergo legal procedures for them to be officially removed from the Senate,” he said.

“At the same time, elections will then take place in line with their replacements in the Senate, and that is the position of Government as of right now.”
