A huge fire broke out at a building at the corner of Bank Street and Cameroon Street in Harare’s central business district on Wednesday night, with thick plumes of smoke billowing above the area.

Videos and pictures circulating online showed the scale of the blaze.

The City of Harare said its Fire Brigade contained the fire before it could spread to other buildings, averting risk to residents and nearby properties.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established.

City of Harare Corporate Communications Manager Stanley Gama commended the brigade for its swift response.

“Once again the City of Harare Fire Brigade was on top of the situation and used their expertise and wealth of experience to control the fire which was threatening to engulf other buildings,” he said.

Gama thanked volunteer organisation The Emergency Help Group (EHG), which mobilised 60,000 litres of water to be on standby so fire engines did not have to return to the station for refilling.

“Our Fire Brigade does so well because they are well trained and very professional, which explains why they train all other organisations in Zimbabwe that operate fire fighting facilities,” he said.
