A 33-year-old truck driver has been banned from driving heavy vehicles for life after he was caught more than twice over the legal alcohol limit and crashed into a parked car in Bulawayo.
Tatenda Janasi was convicted by the Bulawayo Magistrates’ Court on two counts: driving without due care and driving under the influence of alcohol.
The offences arose from an incident on 13 September 2026 along Nketa Drive near Chicken Corner in Bulawayo. The court heard that Janasi was driving an Eicher Pro 1075 heavy motor vehicle when he struck a stationary Toyota Vitz.
The collision damaged the Vitz’s right headlight and front fender. No injuries were reported.
A breath test showed Janasi had an alcohol concentration of 344 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood. This is more than double the legal limit of 150 milligrams per 100 millilitres.
For driving without due care, Janasi was fined US$130, with two months’ imprisonment as an alternative if he fails to pay.
For driving under the influence of alcohol, he was sentenced to 24 months in prison and prohibited from driving heavy motor vehicles for life.
