The 23rd ZANU PF Annual National People’s Conference starts today at Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) in Mashonaland West.

About 7,500 delegates are expected to attend the 12–17 October gathering, which has been billed as a working session to turn party policy into tangible development.

The provisional programme is for a politburo meeting tomorrow (Tuesday), a central committee meeting on Wednesday, travel by delegates on Thursday, the main conference and President’s address on Friday, closure on Saturday and departure on Sunday.

Officials say the schedule may change — for example, if the politburo meeting to officially open the conference is held today.

The conference has already boosted projects in the host province. Key among them is the upgrade of Chinhoyi’s water system, which is set to increase supply from about 22 megalitres to nearly 88 megalitres per day.

Officials say this should ease long-running shortages and support new growth, including the planned 28-hectare Trabablas City. A groundbreaking ceremony for the new project is expected during the week.

However, hosting the event has brought challenges. Delegates have struggled to find decent accommodation in Chinhoyi. The CUT Hotel, the town’s only star-rated facility, is fully booked until 18 October, as are all lodges and student boarding houses.

Some delegates and service providers have had to make private arrangements with families cashing in on the demand, while others are staying with relatives and friends.
