Police have confirmed that two suspected armed robbers were shot dead in separate incidents on 6 October 2026 in Inyathi, Matabeleland North, and in Harare.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said on Thursday, 8 October, that the police will not relent in their fight against armed robbery.
In the first incident, Richmond Thomas Ndlovu was shot near Kenilworth Turn-Off along the Bulawayo-Nkayi Road after he allegedly tried to disarm police officers at a secluded spot.
“He was shot in the leg and stomach,” Nyathi said. Police recovered a Star pistol loaded with seven rounds and a Colombian knife. Ndlovu died on the way to hospital.
Nyathi said the shooting followed the recovery of three pistols at Ndlovu’s home in Exchange Village, Inyathi, on 5 October. His wife, Tryphine Phuti, 29, had allegedly fled the house after he threatened to kill her.
He said Ndlovu was linked to four cases of murder and robbery committed between 5 June and 27 September in and around Inyathi. They include a murder and robbery on 5 June at a service station at Mahamba Business Centre, where a security guard was killed, and a robbery at a supermarket at Badala Business Centre, where US$18,000 in cash was stolen.
In the second incident in Harare, Cosmas Mashavira, 30, was shot dead at the corner of Rosemary Drive and Beatrice Road after a shootout with detectives.
Detectives recovered a 9mm Retay pistol with a magazine containing one round. Mashavira died on arrival at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital.
Nyathi said the shootout followed the arrest of three alleged accomplices — Shame Mwedzi, 44, Leonard Chamboko, 45, and Vincent Magadhi, 50 — in connection with a spate of robberies in Harare and Chitungwiza in which US$1,900 in cash and valuables were stolen.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police warns criminals against attacking or attempting to disarm police officers on duty,” Nyathi said.
He urged the public to continue providing information on suspected criminals and illegal firearms through the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631, on WhatsApp on 0712 800107, or at any nearest police station.
