Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) has postponed its 20th graduation ceremony from Wednesday, 7 October 2026, to Friday, 23 October 2026, after a storm caused severe damage in Masvingo.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, 6 October, the university said the sudden storm that hit the city on Monday night had caused significant damage, particularly to the graduation venue and surrounding infrastructure.

“The postponement has therefore been made in the interest of the safety and wellbeing of all graduands, their families, guests, staff and other stakeholders,” the statement read.

“The University sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen development. Further updates will be issued through the University’s official communication channels.”

Photos of the venue taken in the immediate aftermath of the hailstorm showed collapsed tents and poles.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is Chancellor of all state universities, had been expected to preside over the ceremony.
