A fuel service station in Chinhoyi almost lost US$500 in cash in an elaborate fraud after three suspects allegedly tricked an attendant into handing over banknotes under the pretext of exchanging smaller denominations.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the incident, which occurred at a service station in Chinhoyi’s light industrial area on 14 September.
According to the ZRP, the three suspects have been identified as Freedom Chipano (43), Nyasha Chabata (33) and Shamaine Nyandoro (35).
Police said the suspects, who were travelling in a white Toyota RAV4, registration number AFN 1446, approached a fuel attendant and offered to exchange US$10 notes for US$100 notes.
The attendant is said to have handed over five US$100 notes, totalling US$500.
In return, the suspects allegedly handed the attendant a bundle of bond notes with a single US$10 note on top, secured with a rubber band, to create the impression that the bundle contained United States dollars.
The trio then fled the scene towards Chegutu along the Chinhoyi-Chegutu Road.
Police in Zvimba subsequently intercepted the vehicle and apprehended the suspects.
