The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) says the cold spell affecting parts of Zimbabwe is due to the transition from winter to summer.
Temperatures dropped sharply from Friday following strong winds and rain in several areas, with some places experiencing cloudy conditions, light drizzle and thunderstorms.
Last week, the MSD warned of strong winds across the country from Friday evening until Monday, with thunder and lightning expected in some areas.
In a joint advisory with the Department of Civil Protection issued on Friday, 4 September 2026, the MSD said the windy conditions would run from 4 to 7 September.
Deputy director for public weather services Isaac Masawana said the country had not yet fully entered summer and the current conditions were part of the transitional period.
“We are still transitioning from winter to summer; we are not yet in summer. We are in the transitional period, so the conditions being experienced have nothing to do with whether we are in winter or summer,” said Masawana.
