Five people were injured when a Toyota Quantum hit a National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) locomotive at the Nandi railway crossing along the Ngundu-Tanganda Highway on Wednesday morning.

According to New Ziana, the accident happened at around 2:35 am. The locomotive, number 1003, was operating on the line that transports sugarcane from Mkwasine to the sugar mill at Hippo Valley.

The Quantum, registration number LAF 379 NW, was towing a trailer, registration number JCB 554 NW, when it collided with the locomotive.

Three men and two women were injured. Four sustained minor injuries, while one suffered serious injuries to the leg and hand.

The locomotive was also damaged, with its ABP pipe and vent affected. The collision blocked the main line and disrupted rail operations along the Chiredzi-Mwenezi section.

Police, railway security personnel and an ambulance from Chiredzi General Hospital attended the scene.

Accidents at railway crossings are common in Zimbabwe, with driver recklessness often cited as the main cause.

In June, nine people, including two children, were killed when a passenger bus was hit by a goods train after it reportedly failed to stop at a level crossing on Mbizi Road in Chiredzi district.
