Police have urged parents, school authorities, transport operators, motorists and the general public to put learners’ safety first, especially those travelling to boarding schools, as schools open for the third term on Tuesday, 8 September 2026.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi on Monday, 7 September, said parents, guardians and schools must make sure children use safe and reliable transport.

“Where possible, learners should avoid travelling at night, while vehicles hired to transport them should be roadworthy and suitable for carrying passengers,” he said.

Nyathi warned bus operators and drivers against overloading and against packing learners in with goods and luggage in a way that puts them at risk.

He said drivers must not speed, overtake recklessly, drive negligently or get behind the wheel after drinking or taking dangerous drugs.

Motorists have also been urged to slow down and be extra careful around schools, bus stops, pedestrian crossings and other areas where learners gather.

The ZRP also advised parents, guardians and school authorities to be on the lookout for criminals who may target learners and schools, and to avoid keeping large sums of cash on school premises.

“Parents and guardians are encouraged to make use of banks and other approved financial institutions when paying school fees and other school-related charges,” Nyathi said.

He said police will step up road safety enforcement, traffic operations and general patrols across the country to protect learners travelling to and from school and within their communities.

Anyone who spots criminal activity, suspicious behaviour or traffic offences should report it to their nearest police station, call the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or send a WhatsApp message to 0712 800197.
