The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of a police officer who was caught on camera in a heated confrontation with a Harare City Council employee in the central business district on Tuesday.

The incident happened at the corner of Robert Mugabe Road and Julius Nyerere Way after the officer’s kombi was stopped for violating city by-laws.

The kombi was carrying passengers without the required documentation.

The kombi driver contacted the owner, who is a ZRP officer, and told him that council officers were about to impound the vehicle.

The officer then reportedly used the kombi’s tracking system to remotely disable the vehicle in an attempt to prevent it from being driven to the impound yard.

He later arrived at the scene and confronted the council officer, leading to a heated argument that was caught on camera.

The kombi was eventually towed away and taken to Harare Central Stores.

The ZRP confirmed the arrest late on Tuesday.

“Reference is made to an incident that went viral on social media involving a ZRP police officer and a City of Harare security personnel. The public is advised that the constable involved was arrested and is now facing both criminal and disciplinary charges,” reads the police statement.
