Six people died in two separate road traffic accidents that occurred along major highways on 11 August 2026, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed.
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the fatal crashes occurred at the 279 km peg along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road and at the 146 km peg along the Harare-Bulawayo Road.
The first accident occurred at around 4:30 pm on the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway. A Mazda T35 truck carrying 29 apostolic church congregants veered off the road after the driver lost control and crashed into a river bank.
Four people died on the spot, while 12 others sustained injuries of varying degrees. The bodies of the deceased were taken to Hwange Colliery Mortuary for post-mortem examinations, police said.
Later the same day, a second fatal crash occurred on the Harare-Bulawayo Road. A Honda Fit carrying seven passengers was involved in a head-on collision with a Toyota Hilux at the 146 km peg. After the impact, the Honda Fit veered off the tarmac, overturned and landed on its roof.
Two of the passengers who had been seriously injured in the crash later died after being admitted to Kadoma General Hospital.
Following the two tragedies, Commissioner Nyathi urged motorists to exercise caution and to respect vehicle loading limits.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges motorists to value lives and exercise caution on the roads,” he said. “Motorists must avoid carrying passengers beyond the stipulated capacity of their vehicles.”
