Zimbabwe Turns To AI And Drones To Boost Mineral Exploration

Essential Tools

Zimbabwe is turning to artificial intelligence, drones and advanced geoscience to accelerate mineral exploration and improve the discovery of new deposits.

The Minister of Mines and Mining Development, Polite Kambamura, said this while addressing the inaugural Exploration Forum at Mine Entra 2026 in Bulawayo on Thursday.

Kambamura said emerging technologies will help modernise exploration by making geological surveys faster, safer and more efficient, and will complement rather than replace the work of geologists as Zimbabwe seeks to unlock its full mineral potential and attract fresh investment into the sector.

“Emerging technologies such as drones, artificial intelligence, and advanced geoscience tools will not replace geologists,” said Kambamura.

“Instead, they will enable safer, faster, more efficient, and more productive exploration and geological surveys over vast and often inaccessible areas.”

He said Zimbabwe must embrace innovation to reverse decades of limited systematic exploration that has slowed the discovery of new resources.

Kambamura said while the country has significant geological potential, it needs modern tools, investment and strategic partnerships to convert that potential into operating mines.

He said Government is also rebuilding and modernising the national geological database through a digital repository that will integrate historical records, institutional documents and mineral resource information.
