A 50-year-old South African national has been handed an effective three-year prison sentence by the Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court after being caught smuggling over five kilogrammes of dagga into Zimbabwe.

The convict, identified as Maila Mashabane David, was found guilty of unlawfully dealing in dangerous drugs following his arrest near the border.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), on 25 May 2026, 2026, at approximately 6 PM, police officers stationed along the Limpopo River received a tip-off regarding an individual who had slipped into the country using an illegal entry point.

Acting swiftly on the intelligence, law enforcement officers tracked down and intercepted David.

A subsequent search revealed four cobs of dagga weighing 5.23 kilogrammes, tightly wrapped in black plastic and cellotape.

The illicit cargo, valued at US$523, was found hidden inside a navy blue satchel that David was carrying on his back. The contraband was immediately seized by the authorities.
